When I'm going about my business, I find chatty, overly-friendly clerks annoying, but I know that they are trying to create a friendly environment for business reasons, and, if I can appreciate anything, I can appreciate a person/entity trying to earn an honest dollar. On the other hand, I want polite... not chatty. I'm concentrating on what I'm doing. I'm concentrating on an efficient and timely execution of my task. I don't want to share my feelings with a stranger.
My favorite radio talkshow, Armstrong and Getty on 650AM in Sacramento, California, has an illuminating email that coins the phrase, "chatterbombed."
